I mean, they're in the top 10 in the SERPs while I'm at 15. Linking to them might boost me up a bit but it wouldn't it make getting above them a bit difficult? The idea of linking to sites in the same industry, that are not competing for the same keywords sounds like a better option. It will be very helpful and will allow them to do more. There are many great tutorials out there (htmlgoodies.com is one i recommend) to help you learn html (and then other languages such as css) very easily.
